Precision Bore

Using specialist techniques, and the experience of our glass processors, Plowden & Thompson has the ability to create a state change in glass tubing.

There two methods employed in this process;;
1.    The passing of round tubing through a mini furnace and a mandrill in order to change its profile from round to any other required shape.

Using machinery especially designed to allow tube to be heated in a mini furnace and then pulled over a mandrill, whilst the glass is in a state of plasticity, allows us to change the round profile to square, oval, hexagonal etc. Looking at the images you will see a long track in the middle of which is the mini furnace. You will also notice in another image the weights at the end of the track used for pulling the tube through the furnace. Once the furnace is heated sufficiently, and the weights adjusted for the specific job, a length of tube is placed onto the track and fed into the mini furnace. As it softens it is drawn through the mandrill by the weights and in doing so re-creates the shape within. Once the glass has cooled it is checked and cut into appropriate lengths. However in some cases it has to be cut and one end sealed depending on the customers use of the product.

2.    The semi melting of tube in order to draw it out to capillary sizes.

In this method small sections of tube are melted and allowed to flow vertically down and then pulled out to achieve the correct thickness, controlled by a laser. The glass, so thin it can be knotted, is collected and wound around a large wheel before being taken to an inspection area where it will be cut into the lengths required by the customer.

The machine we use for the manufacture of capillary tubing is slightly more precise and is controlled by laser in order to achieve the minute dimensions required. This is very specialist work and only highly trained staff, with years of experience, can achieve the correct results. We produce capillary tube down to 0.150mm.

In all cases we are able to make to your own specifications if required.
